About EFP

The Expertise Centre for Forensic Psychiatry (EFP) was founded in 2002 as a joint initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Wellbeing and Sport, and twelve high security Forensic Psychiatric Hospitals.

EFP's mission is to support forensic mental health institutions in their endeavors to raise the quality of treatment and care. This means that EFP stimulates contacts between the various experts involved, collects the latest knowledge and makes it readily available to the field. The ultimate goal is to achieve a safer society .

EFP serves the whole forensic mental health field, consisting of forensic psychiatric hospitals, forensic wards in general psychiatric hospitals, as well as psychiatric wards in correctional facilities. EFP aims to be an independent quality enhancement institute with regard to indication, treatment and care, longstay , rehabilitation and reintegration of forensic mental health patients.

The EFP-activities take place in the following areas:

  • Initiating, coordinating and facilitating multicentre studies covering broad areas of forensic mental health services
  • Development of evidence-based forensic treatment programs
  • Development of national databases

In 2010, the EFP established a Scientific Council in which international scientists are seated. The Scientific Council serves as a scientific advisory body. In general, the members will not meet, but are consulted if necessary.
